Who are we?
We are individuals and organizations around the world who are researching, teaching, telling, and creating artwork and music about a grand narrative of evolution and its implications. We look at the WHOLE narrative — with awe and wonder — as primary. We are also students and others who want to start study groups to connect with others who want to explore the evolving universe as a primary context more deeply.
We represent different lineages of individuals and organizations that approach the Great Story of Evolution in different ways. Some members were inspired by the work of David Christian, Fred Spier, Cynthia Brown and others who call their work Big History. This lineage focuses on an evidence-based objective narrative of evolution, applying the methods developed in the natural sciences across all of history, including human history.
Other members are inspired by Teilhard de Chardin, Thomas Berry, Brian Swimme and Mary Evelyn Tucker, a lineage that uses a science-based narrative as a starting point to focus on personal and cultural meaning. And other members are inspired by Maria Montessori and her son Mario who developed a remarkable cosmic education curriculum for the elementary level over 60 years ago. We anticipate that additional lineages we don’t yet know about will come onto the Network. If you represent a lineage not named here, please contact us. Back to the top of the page.
What’s Deep Time?
“Deep Time” as a concept was first developed in the 18th century by geologist James Hutton when discoveries indicated that earth is far older than anyone had thought . . . not thousands of years old, but billions of years old. Since then, the concept of Deep Time has been expanded to include all of cosmic history from the big bang 13.8 billion years ago to today. The Deep Time Journey Network is dedicated to orienting humankind to the great story of evolution as our primary context, and learning from it so we can make the best choices possible for planning the future. How does the site work?
Anyone who visits the site can see all resources, events, the forum, and public conversations inside groups. Interacting on the site — such as adding resources and events, messaging others, starting and joining conversations on the Forum or in the Activity Stream, etc. — is restricted to approved Contributing Members. Should you become a member? Take the test!
All are invited to become basic members! When it comes to Contributing Members, you should know that we’re picky because Contributing Members interact with others on the site and post resources and events. If you are enthralled with the Great Story and can answer “yes” to any one of these questions, we encourage you to participate in the Network as a Contributing Member.
Are you teaching Big History, the Universe Story, or Montessori Cosmic Education?
Are you teaching the Great Story by another name?
Are you researching the implications of the Great Story for how to address major issues of today?
Are you exploring interpretations of the Great Story for personal and/or cultural meaning?
Do you have resources or ideas about the Great Story that you’d like to share?
Would you like to start a group to study the Great Story?
If you’re still not sure whether or not a Contributing Membership is for you, then write us on the Contact Page. We’ll get back to you right away. Back to the top of the page.

To become a contributing member, answer the extended profile questionnaire and submit it for approval. To find the extended profile questionnaire hover over your name in the upper right hand corner of the screen and select “Edit my Profile,” then selected “Extended Profile.” Answer the questions and submit the profile for approval. Is there a membership fee?
Right now no. But we will start charging a small membership fee in order to support the site. The Deep Time Journey Network is a non-profit organization so we rely heavily on volunteers to keep costs down but charging some fees will help us maintain the site and add many new programs and features. Back to the top of the page
Can I edit my profile after it has been approved?
Absolutely! You can make changes to your profile any time. After you log in, simply hover over your name in the upper right corner of the screen, and select “Edit my Profile.” Edit away and then be sure to save your changes by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on “Save Changes”! What kinds of resources can I add to the Deep Time Journey Website?
Once you’re an approved contributing member you can add resources with a deep time evolutionary perspective. Of particular interest are resources about how the scientific narrative of evolution is being integrated into cultures throughout the world in education, art, psychology, and any other field. What resources have been helpful to you that show the implications of this stunning new story for our time . . . for our relationship with earth and each other? Resources can be links to: 1) videos on other sites such as YouTube and Vimeo; 2) book listings on Amazon and other sites; 3) websites; 4) audio recordings; and any other links. Resources can also be documents that can be uploaded onto the site. Another important kind of resource is quotes. In a sense, we’re creating a global filing cabinet for all those resources you and everyone have scattered all over and can never find when you need them. Now you have a place to put them while sharing them with the entire Deep Time Journey Network! Back to the top of the page
How do I add resources?
Once you’re an approved contributing member you can add resources that you created and/or resources that you didn’t create but recommend. After logging in, hover over your name in the upper right hand corner of the screen, select resources or events. Under your picture, select “Resources.” You will see three tabs: Resources I/We Created, Resources I/We Recommend; and Add a Resource. Select “Add a Resource.” (Whether the resource you want to add is something you created, or something you didn’t create but recommend, you will use the same questionnaire accessible through “Add a Resource.”) Once you finish answering the questions, the program will automatically sort resources so they appear under either “Resources I/We Created” or “Resources I/Recommend.” If you’re a creator of the resource, be sure to spell your name EXACTLY as your profile name so that it appears under “Resources I/We Recommend.” If a resource should appear under “Resources I/We Recommend” but doesn’t, be sure to check the spelling of your name. Back to the top of the page
What if a resource is copyrighted?
Read our Guidelines for Uploading Content which is accessible on the “Add a Resource” page. If a resource is copyrighted, you’ll need to get permission from the copyright holder(s) and answer the questions about copyright restrictions. Links to other websites and quotes are in the public domain and therefore do not require permission in order to add them to the site. Your name will be associated with all resources you add — you are responsible for violating any copyright restrictions. If you are the copyright holder, be sure to answer all copyright questions too. Back to the top of the page
Can I edit a resource after it has been added?
Yes indeed! Go to your resources under your profile. Select either “Resources I/We Created” or “Resources I/We Recommend” depending on where the particular resource resides. Then select “Edit.” After you make your changes, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “Update Resource.” Back to the top of the page
How do I start a group and what kinds of groups are there?
After logging in, hover over your name in the upper right hand corner of the screen, then hover over “Groups,” then select “Create a Group.” Answer the questions. Once you select “Create a Group” you will be given three privacy options: public group, private group, or hidden group.
Public groups will be listed in the groups directory, can be joined by any site member, and group content and activity will be visible to any site member.
Private groups are: 1) only accessible to users who request membership and are accepted into the group; and 2) listed in the groups directory and in search results. Private Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.
Hidden groups are not listed in the groups directory or search results; and content and activity will only be visible to members of the group. Hidden groups are accessible by only the users who are invited to join the group. Back to the top of the page
